History for Judge

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, August 14.
MLB
The best part about baseball is that they’re always back the next day… here’s what happened on a busy Wednesday in the major leagues:
Aaron Judge hit a home run again. This was a big one though, as Judge became the fastest player in Major League history to hit 300 homers. Judge’s Yankees were down 2-1 in the 7th inning, before storming back to beat the White Sox 10-2.
Down three runs with two outs in the ninth inning, rookie Wyatt Langford delivered! The Rangers outfielder blasted a game-tying three run homer, and Texas went on to beat Boston 9-7 in extra innings.
For the sixth game in a row, the Arizona Diamondbacks were victorious. They beat the Rockies 11-4, with this Joc Pederson little-league home run a must-see highlight.
It’s Houston, however, who holds the longest win streak in the league. The Astros won their eighth game in a row yesterday, taking down the Rays 2-1.
Reds outfielder T.J. Friedl hit two home runs on his birthday, leading the Reds to a 9-2 drubbing of the slumping St. Louis Cardinals.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
A big trade took place yesterday in the NFL. The New England Patriots sent pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons for a third round pick. Judon and the Falcons are expected to work out the expensive contract extension that the rebuilding Patriots were not likely to sign.
There are two professional baseball players named Max Muncy. One is an all-star infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the other was drafted just a few years ago and plays in the Oakland Athletics minor league system. With the elder Muncy on a rehab assignment, the two Max Muncys met for the first time as opponents. Not sure if that’s actually a noteworthy story, but it’s pretty cool!
Finally, an update on some news from yesterday– Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is officially out for the season. Best of luck to the young QB on his recovery.
POWER RANKINGS
After a lengthy Olympic break, the WNBA is back. Each team has about 15 games left before the playoffs begin in late September, so The Remix decided to tell you how the league stacks up:
TIER FIVE: The 2025 Draft is Stacked
Washington Mystics | 11. LA Sparks | 10. Dallas Wings
TIER FOUR: Playoff Bubble
Atlanta Dream | 8. Chicago Sky | 7. Indiana Fever
You’ll notice Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark’s teams are both in this tier. While their battle for rookie of the year honors is exhilarating, both the Sky and Fever are still a year away from contending for a title.
TIER THREE: If Everything Goes Right…
Phoenix Mercury | 5. Seattle Storm
On paper, the Mercury are one of the best teams in the league. Due to injuries and the impressive talent of the teams ahead of them, however, both Phoenix and Seattle are going to need everything to fall into place in order to make a deep playoff run.
TIER TWO: Championship Contenders
Minnesota Lynx | 3. Connecticut Sun | 2. Las Vegas Aces
Although they have the fifth best record in the W, the Aces are the defending champions and led by reigning MVP A’ja Wilson… they’ve earned our respect and the number two spot. That takes nothing away from the impressive groups in Minnesota and Connecticut, who will be tough outs during the playoffs.
TIER ONE: The New York Liberty
The superteam to end all superteams, Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart lead a group with no flaws. It’s championship or bust for the Liberty.
PLAY OF THE DAY
We’ve got two plays of the day today! First, it’s play-of-the-day veteran Kevin Kiermaier:

Second, I have no idea how this goal from a random Leagues Cup soccer game found me, but it was too good not to share:

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Braves @ Giants, 3:45 PM; Red Sox @ Orioles, 6:35 PM
Surprise! Atlanta and San Francisco are playing a four-game series, and we have been blessed with today’s pitching matchup. Max Fried takes on Logan Webb as these two wild card squads battle with their aces on the mound. Later, an AL East rivalry begins a weekend set in Baltimore.
GOLF: FedEx Cup St. Jude Championship Round One, beginning at 8:20 AM on NBC/Golf Channel/Peacock
Today is round one of week one of the three week end-of-year PGA playoffs. It’s a slightly confusing system, but basically the best golfers in the world are playing in three big tournaments for lots and lots of money, and it all starts today. As always in the year 2024, Scottie Scheffler is the favorite.
TENNIS: Cincinnati Open: Gael Monfils vs Carlos Alcaraz, not before 7 PM on Tennis Channel
There are a lot of great matches today in Cincy, but one stands out more than the others. Leading off the night session, my favorite player goes up against (arguably) the best player in the world. Monfils is 37 and closer to the end of his career than the beginning, but he’s one of the best athletes in the world. It’ll be an entertaining match against Carlitos.
