An Avalanche of assists in Colorado
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, November 5th.
NHL
Just one league had on-court (on-ice?) action yesterday. Let’s recap some hockey!
Not one, not two… ok I’ll skip ahead, because Nathan MacKinnon had five assists last night! With their star forward dishing out the puck, the Colorado Avalanche beat the Seattle Kraken 6-3.
Martin Necas broke a 4-4 tie in the final minute of the game, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to their seventh win a row.
The Remix would like to adopt the underdog San Jose Sharks this season– they’ve now won four of their last five games, after Alexander Wennberg scored this awesome overtime winner against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The New York Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in a shootout, thanks to this game-winning goal by Bo Horvat:
Bo Horvat, that was FILTHY! 🤢

CFP Rankings
Well, the first top 25 list has been dropped– you can check it out here. Here are my two main takeaways:
The Remix correctly listed 23 of teams 25 and went 11/12 for who made the initial bracket. The committee ranked Army (I had them 26th) and Louisville, while I listed Syracuse and Arizona State. In the bracket, the committee gave Alabama the nod over SMU. While I think it’s likely those teams finish in that order, I’m not sure why that distinction was given at this point in the year. Other than the fact that Bama plays in the SEC
BYU was given a first-round bye as the fourth-best conference champion, but the committee ranked the Cougars ninth. I understand undefeated Indiana at eight due to their strength of schedule, but BYU should feel disrespected.
NFL Trade Deadline
A flurry of moves were made yesterday afternoon– our friends at The Athletic complied a complete list. Or if you’d prefer, here are the most noteworthy names switching uniforms:
The upstart Washington Commanders made a big swing for New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Another cornerback, Tre’Davious White, was sent by the Los Angeles Rams to the Baltimore Ravens.
Wide receiver Mike Williams has been dealt by the New York Jets to the Pittsburgh Steelers. And the head-scratcher of the day was the Dallas Cowboys acquiring young wideout Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers.
Finally, the Detroit Lions acquired a pass rusher to replace the loss of their star Aidan Hutchinson- Detroit traded for Browns veteran Za’Darius Smith.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Some off-season injury news from Major League Baseball… Shohei Ohtani underwent successful surgery to repair the injury he suffered during the World Series. He’ll be healthy in time for spring training… on the other hand, the Atlanta Braves announced neither of their injured stars, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Spencer Strider, will be ready by Opening Day.
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the year-end ATP finals with an undisclosed injury. It’s now official that 2024 is the first year since 2005 that Novak did not win a single ATP tournament. Of course, he won the gold medal at the Olympics. But this announcement may signal the end is near for the winningest player in men’s tennis history.
Joel Embiid has been suspended three games for a physical altercation in the locker room with a reporter. Embiid’s response was in regards to a story written by the reporter that made unnecessary personal references to Embiid’s family and personal life. Nothing is going well for the 76ers star in this young season, in which he has yet to step on the basketball court.
The Denver Nuggets will be without Aaron Gordon for multiple weeks due to a calf injury. Gordon’s injury is a big blow for Denver, who have started the season quite strong.
CONTRIBUTOR FOR THE DAY
Claire M. in Boston–
Truly legendary teams are made not in win-loss records, but in dedication and drive to their sport, regardless of the attenuating circumstances against which they face. I believe it was the wise Donald “Childish Gambino” Glover who said that. Well, the Back Bay Benchwarmers of Boston, MA are truly the epitome of these famous words. Despite posting an impressive 0-5 record against teams no doubt recruiting straight from Alex Rodriguez’s bloodline, the Triple B’s have brought fire and brimstone to Boston’s Hub Sports scene. What they lack in softball gloves, cleats, and any sort of relevant ball-sport experience, they make up for in orange slices, illegal bunts, and birds hit by baseball pitches. Congratulations on an excellent season so far, Triple B’s!
Thank you Claire for growing the Remix and sharing this incredible update from the Boston recreational softball scene. Good luck to the Triple B’s on the rest of their softball season! I can feel a win coming soon…
