Allen, Curry, and a new face in Curling
Good Morning! Today is Monday, November 17. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.
NFL
Week 11 is in the books… let’s have some fun this morning, shall we?
The Dolphins and Commanders went to overtime in Madrid, before Miami kicked a field goal to win 16-13. This was a real game of fùtbol, as the two teams combined for five kicks through the goalposts.
Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati 34-12, thanks to two touchdown catches by Kenneth “No pain, no” Gainwell.
Bhayshul “Here comes the train, toot” Tuten ran for one TD and Travis Etienne ran for two more, leading Jacksonville to a resounding 35-6 win over the Chargers.
Josh Allen-a-day’s-work threw for three touchdowns and ran for three more, reminding us all why he’s the reigning MVP. The Bills ended a brief losing streak with a crucial 44-32 win over the Buccaneers– shoutout Sean Tucker, who finished with 140 yards from scrimmage and three scores for Tampa Bay.
It sure wasn’t pretty, but after blowing a 16-3 fourth quarter lead, the Bears kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to beat the Vikings 19-17.
Houston had plenty of problems, but managed to beat Tennessee 16-13. Matthew the Wright stuff kicked three field goals, including the game-winner with no time left on the clock.
Bryce “Forever'“ Young was the Alpha in the Panthers-Falcons game, throwing for a franchise record 448 yards! Young and the Panthers beat the Falcons 30-27 in overtime.
Can you feel Jordan Love tonight? Packers receiver Christian Watson can, as he caught the go-ahead touchdown pass with just over four minutes remaining. Green Bay beat the Giants 27-20.
Hey dArnold, stop throwing interceptions! LA picked off the Seattle QB four times yesterday, and Seattle still had a shot to win the game on a last-second kick from 61 yards… that didn’t quite have the distance. The Rams beat the Seahawks 21-19. And shoutout to the Punt of the Year by Rams Ethan Evans!
San Francisco looked Purdy good in a blowout win over the Arizona Cardinals. Their QB is healthy, back on the field, and throwing beautiful touchdown passes.
Well Shedeur Sanders finally had his NFL debut and even had a chance to lead a drive down the field to win the game for the Cleveland Browns… it did not go well. But the story of this game is how Mark “Julie” Andrews tricked the opposition and ran free through the open field, singing the sweet sound of victory music for the Baltimore Ravens:
Kansas City and Denver battled for four quarters in a really well-played defensive football game. But in the end, it was a strong Will and Lutz and Lutz of field goals by the Broncos kicker that won the day. Denver beat KC 22-19, moving to 9-2 and taking a commanding lead of the AFC West division.
If you watched Sunday Night Football, I hope you’re a fan of defense. No puns here, just reporting that Philly won a low-scoring slog 16-9 over Detroit. The Eagles were the better team all night, but their win didn’t come without a controversial late-game call.
NCAA FOTBALL
A couple notable results in the college game this weekend, too:
(3) Texas A&M trailed South Carolina 30-3 in the second half. But the Aggies rallied to stay undefeated, miraculously surviving for a 31-30 win.
But don’t worry, we still had some SEC chaos! (11) Oklahoma went to Tuscaloosa and upset (4) Alabama 23-21.
(18) Michigan kicked a walk-off field goal at Wrigley Field to beat Northwestern 24-22.
And on Saturday night, (5) Georgia and Kirby Smart showed once again why they’re the class of the sport. A huge fourth-down conversion and surprise onside kick helped the Dawgs beat (10) Texas 35-10.
NBA
Can we take a moment to talk about Steph Curry? He was off the mark last night (although Moses Moody hit 10 threes and Golden State still won) but the greatest shooter of all time is somehow still at the top of the game. Steph dropped 49 points in a 109-108 win over Wemby and the Spurs on Friday night. He’s averaging 29.1 a game this season, which would be the fourth-highest total in his career. That’s despite playing 30 minutes a game, the third-lowest amount in his career. He’s leading the league in three-pointers per game (4.5) and making them at a 39% clip. Golden State is undefeated at home and off to a 9-6 start in the extremely crowded and competitive Western Conference. A well-rested, efficient Curry is only going to make the Warriors more dangerous as the year goes on. Makes sense why he left Under Armor to continue the Curry Brand independently going forward…
TENNIS
The 2025 tennis season is officially over. Last week, Elena Rybakina won the WTA Finals and took home the five-million dollar prize money. Aryna Sabalenka had already clinched the year-end number one ranking, but it was a notable accomplishment for Rybakina nonetheless.
Yesterday was the finals of the ATP, and another chapter in the incredible rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. The Italian was victorious, taking home the trophy in his home country after a 7-6, 7-5 contest. Alcaraz ends the year with the number one ranking, but there’s no doubt that these two super-humans are head and shoulders above anyone else in men’s tennis. The best part? Sinner and Alcaraz continue to push each other.
NEWSWORTHY
Big changes are coming in the MLS! First, the league will move their matches out from the paywall on Apple TV. Next season, you’ll be able to watch the top American teams without an additional subscription. But the big news is the schedule– starting in 2027, the MLS will start in the fall and go through the spring, aligning themselves with the global soccer calendar. Time will tell if this helps the league grow. Most importantly, they’ve got a plan in place to avoid outdoor games in Minnesota in December.
Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge were named the NL and AL MVPs, respectively. Shohei joins Barry Bonds as the only players in MLB history to win more than three MVP awards. Judge, who narrowly beat out Cal Raleigh, won his third MVP in the last four years.
The Mariners have reportedly agreed to a five-year deal to bring back free agent first baseman Josh Naylor. Seattle acquired Naylor at the trade deadline this past summer, and he quickly became a fan favorite.
New Orleans fired head coach Willie Green. The Pelicans started the season 2-10.
Pittsburgh may have won today, but the Steelers will be without their starting quarterback for a while. Although the severity has yet to be confirmed, Aaron Rodgers may have broken his left wrist. We’ll learn more over the next few days.
Finally, big news in the Olympic world just a few months out from the Winter games! Five-time Olympian John Shuster will not be representing the US in Italy this February. Shuster and his team were eliminated in trials last night, paving the way for a new generation of curlers to win glory for the red, white, and blue. Shuster was asked if he’d be ready for a comeback and attempt to make an Olympic run in 2030; “I’m not counting me out, necessarily, because I got nothing else to do. I got no job,” he replied.
