Alabama State goes dancing and the Cubs are in last place

Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, March 19.

FIRST FOUR

Last team into the field North Carolina absolutely destroyed San Diego State in Dayton, Ohio. The Tar Heels beat the Aztecs 95-68, earning a first-round matchup against Ole Miss. Not a shocking result, as UNC remains undefeated in quad two games this year. We’ll see how they do on Thursday against a quad one opponent, where they have a 1-12 record.

Alabama State vs St. Francis was not a very pretty basketball game. It did, however, give us this amazing start to the tournament. Enjoy:

MLB

This season begins the same way last year ended– with a Los Angeles Dodgers victory. Shohei Ohtani had two hits and scored twice, Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up just one run over five innings, and LA beat Chicago 4-1. And if you read the headline on today’s Remix, you’ll know the loss puts the Cubs in last place in the entire league. One more game in Tokyo (that already started, by the way– go turn it on!) before Major League Baseball returns stateside.

NBA

Four games last night means four recaps. Here we go:

  • Atlanta beat Charlotte 134-102. If you don’t know about Dyson Daniels, you should learn about him. The young guard for the Hawks is known for his stellar defense, but last night he contributed 22 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the win.

  • Playing without Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Boston took care of Brooklyn 104-96.

  • Jimmy Butler stepped up as Steph Curry took the night off, leading Golden State with 24 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists. The Warriors beat the Bucks 104-93.

  • After an incredible 16-game win streak, Cleveland has dropped two in a row. Last night the Cavs lost to the Clippers. Kawhi Leonard led LA with 33 points.

NHL

Let’s use this space to highlight a team unexpectedly surging towards the playoffs– the St. Louis Blues. A 4-1 victory last night over Nashville moved the Blues into a wild card spot. They’ve won nine of 12 games since the 4 Nations Face-Off in mid-February. Maybe Canada goalie Jordan Binnington carried some of that winning magic over to his club team? Regardless, watch out for STL down the home stretch.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

Closer Craig Kimbrel has reunited with his first team, signing a minor-league contract with the Atlanta Braves. One of the best receivers of the century and (in my mind) a future hall of famer, we’ll see if Kimbrel makes it to the big leagues for one last year.

While the state of West Virginia considers suing the NCAA over the way the selection committee picks teams, their head coach is already moving on. Darian DeVries will be the new head basketball coach at Indiana University.

Defensive end Brandon Graham is retiring from the NFL after 15 seasons. He spent his entire career in Philadelphia.

Two pieces of tennis news to wrap things up today. First, we’ve got a new sports power couple: the number 14 player in the world Ben Shelton and Team USA soccer star Trinity Rodman. On the less entertaining and much more nebulous side, a group of pro tennis players are suing the governing bodies of the sport– the ATP, WTA, and four Grand Slams. I don’t really understand the whole thing, but the desire to restructure the schedule, prize money, and conditions on tour has been bubbling for a while. We’ll see what happens.
