A wild Wimbledon
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, July 1.
TENNIS
Coco Gauff, Alexander Zverev, and Jessica Pegula joined the lengthy upset list yesterday in what became a historic first round. We’ve officially seen the most seeds eliminated this early since Grand Slams moved to 32 seeded players in 2001! The combination of a short grass court season, extremely deep draws, and some well-timed shot-making by underdogs has presented us a Wimbledon for the ages. I hope you’re all enjoying it!
MLB
We’ve got highlights from this side of the pond, too:
Shohei Ohtani hit his 30th home run of the year, leading the Dodgers to a 6-1 win over the White Sox. He leads the National League.
What a day for George Springer! Down 5-4 in the seventh inning, the Blue Jays outfielder walloped this grand slam. Springer finished the day with 7 RBIs and Toronto beat the Yankees 12-5.
Jacob DeGrom allowed just two runs through six dominant innings as the Rangers beat the Orioles 10-2. That’s now 14 consecutive starts of five or more innings and two or less earned runs. Catcher Jonah Heim explains it best: “You’ve got the best pitcher on the planet on the mound, I feel like people are going to show up and there's going to be a lot of energy. I feel like our team feeds off it. He's going to give us a chance to win each and every day. He's great. He makes my job real easy. I sit back there, catch the ball, throw to third base after he strikes people out and we go about our business.”
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Milwaukee stunned the basketball world with two huge moves yesterday. First, the Bucks announced a deal with center Myles Turner, one of the top free agents on the market. Turner had played his entire career in Indiana and was a key component of their recent run to the Finals. In order to clear enough cap room for the talented big man, Milwaukee then announced they were releasing and stretching the deal of injured guard Damian Lillard. Instead of playing out the remaining two years on his contract, Lillard is now a free agent and his salary will be paid out over five seasons. A huge risk for the Bucks, but with Giannis on the team, it just might pay off.
Over in the NHL, kudos to the New York Rangers for two savvy moves. First, they signed free agent defenseman Vladislov Gavrikov to a seven-year deal. Then, New York traded defenseman K’Andre Miller to Carolina for Scott Morrow, a first round pick, and a second round pick. Good job to maximize what could have been a difficult situation, although Miller might end up a great asset for the Canes. Elsewhere in hockey, the big move of the day was Mikael Granlund signing with the Anaheim Ducks.
I guess the NFL– or at least the Miami Dolphins– felt left out and wanted to be in on the offseason action. Miami struck a deal with the Giants for tight end Darren Waller, who will come out of retirement to join the team. An interesting gamble on a talented player.
Congratulations to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who signed a new four-year contract extension that will give him the highest annual salary in the NBA. The supermax deal is worth $285 million.
Finally, we’re sending our best to beloved halftime performer Red Panda, who fell yesterday during halftime of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Final. Anyone who’s seen her act knows how incredible she is. Hoping for a speedy recovery.
