A team so nice they came back twice
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, May 7.
NBA
I have a confession to make– with the Celtics up big in the fourth quarter last night, I turned off the game. There was no chance the New York Knicks could mount another comeback, right? Wrong. They did it again! Just like in game one a few nights ago, the visitors trailed Boston by 20 points. And just like a few nights ago, they roared back to steal a massive victory on the road– the defending champions are officially in trouble:
Boston led 84-68 with 8:40 left. They didn’t make another field goal until a Jayson Tatum dunk with 18.5 seconds remaining! Still, that basket gave them a one-point lead.
While Jalen Brunson was held to just 17 points, he was instrumental in securing the win. The Knicks point guard scored is team’s final six points, including the game-winning free throws with 12.1 seconds remaining.
Mikal Bridges was the star the of the night. After going scoreless for the first three quarters, Bridges dropped 14 in the fourth. And while he ended game one with a nice stea;, Bridges followed that up with another stellar defensive effort to deny Tatum and the Celtics as the buzzer went off in game two:
The other game last night was far less dramatic. After blowing a lead late in game one, Oklahoma City didn’t mess around in game two– the Thunder crushed the Denver Nuggets 149-106. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points on 11-13 shooting and the top seed in the West took care of business. Buckle up everyone, this series is just getting started.
NHL
Is this the year? Is it fair to keep asking that question after every win? Well, the Maple Leafs are up 2-0 on the Florida Panthers after another impressive home-ice victory. After a back-and-forth game, Mitch Marner scored the winning goal early into the third period. However, they say a series doesn’t truly begin until the road team wins a game, so we’ll see how the defending champions respond in game three. In the meantime we’ll keep asking that question… is this the year? Can Toronto get over the hump?
There is no hockey player on the planet right now as hot as Mikko Rantanen. The Winnipeg Jets scored two goals in the second period– in between was a Rantanen hat trick, good enough to lead the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory. There’s just no stopping this guy!
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
PSG held a one goal lead coming into the second leg of their semifinal last night against Arsenal. Unlike Tuesday’s insane contest, the home team held on to their early lead and avoided the drama. PSG scored two goals in either half and defeated their British opponents 2-1, booking their spot in the finals at the end of the month. My favorite part was the managers, who had a funny back-and-forth after the match:
Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta: “I am very proud of the players, 100%. I don't think there's been a better team [than Arsenal] in the competition from what I have seen, but we are out. When you analyse both games, who has been the best player? The MVP has been the same player, the goalkeeper. And the Champions League is decided in the boxes and it's won the game for them because obviously after 20 minutes, and what happened in London as well, the result should have been very different. Still, the team that I've seen today is probably one of the best, if not the best team in Europe.”
PSG boss, Luis Enrique: “"Mikel Arteta is a great friend, but I don't agree at all. They played in a clever way and they got the match to the right moment for them because they played in the way they wanted, and the way they love. But in the two legs we scored more than them and that is the most important thing in football. Arsenal played a great match, and we suffered, but we deserved to get to the final. They are a great team, but I repeat, we scored more goals, we played in a great way in the first leg, and the second half of the second leg was a different match, and we could have scored even more goals."
So the losing manager thinks his team was better, and the winning coach responds by pointing to the scoreboard… whether it’s a playground or the biggest stage in Europe, we’re all playing the same game.
MLB
Last but not least, a few highlights from the baseball diamond:
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the first team in the league to 25 wins. Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani each tripled in a 10-1 victory over Miami.
Juan Soto is starting to heat up… the highly-paid slugger knocked two homers out of the park yesterday, leading the Mets to a 7-1 win over Arizona.
Padres starter Dylan Cease left yesterday’s start early with an arm injury (he’s ok, it was just a cramp) but for almost seven innings, the San Diego ace had a no-hitter going. Although the Yankees came back to beat the Padres 4-3 in extra innings, no one was more excited about Cease’s performance than Emma Stone:
