A slugger, a cyclist, and the champions of Europe

Good Morning! Today is Monday, July 28. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports on day.

MLB

Two other quick notes from the weekend– there’s plenty of noteworthy baseball news later on as we the trade deadline approaches this week:

  • Congratulations to Mike Trout on his 1,000th career RBI! Because of injuries and the win-loss record of his team, it’s easy to forget how dominant Trout was for the first 10 years of his career. Here’s to him one day coming up to bat in October on the biggest stage.

  • You’ll find this Jose Iglesias play in the dictionary under the word “slick”

SOCCER

England are the champions of Europe! The women’s national team won the Euros yesterday after a thrilling final against Spain. It’s the second consecutive win for England after their victory three years ago in 2022. This time it took a penalty shootout to secure the trophy– goalie Hannah Hampton came up with two crucial saves, setting up Chloe Kelly for what turned out to be the final shot:

TENNIS

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was serving up 5-3 in the third set in the finals of the DC Open yesterday. The talented Spainard had never won a title on tour… and even after three chances with a championship point yesterday, he was unable to clinch a victory. Alex de Minaur took home the trophy in a thrilling comeback victory, kicking off tennis’ hard court summer swing in style. Afterwards, de Minaur sat with a distraught Davidovich Fokina. Not to be cheesy, but the two competitors gave us a true “this is what sports is all about” moment:

TOUR DE FRANCE

Tadej Pogaçar is the greatest athlete you don’t know about. The 26-year-old Slovenian has clinched his fourth career Tour de France title, tying British cyclist Chris Froome for the second-most wins all-time and trailing the record by just one. You can read more about his historic race here.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS

As mentioned, it’s trade deadline week in Major League Baseball. Of course, we start this morning with the New York Yankees. Superstar Aaron Judge is on the Injured List with an elbow injury– the worst was averted, however, as it’s believed the team caught the injury before a potential tear would have required Tommy John surgery. Judge should be back soon. In the meantime, the Yankees swung two trades to bolster their lineup: utility infielder Amed Rosario should shore up the bench, while Ryan McMahon becomes the new starting third baseman. McMahon leaves the Rockies after years of trade rumors. He’s got a great glove, but the pressure is on for his bat to produce in the Bronx.

We go from the Big Apple to Kansas City for the rest of the weekend’s updates. The Royals are officially going for it, swinging a deal with the Diamondbacks for outfielder Randal Grichuk and extending potential trade chip and front-end starter Seth Lugo for two more seasons. Both moves are clear signals from the front office that they believe in this team. I can only imagine the mood in KC’s clubhouse right now.

And we end at the heart of the baseball world: Cooperstown. Five legends were inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame yesterday afternoon; Dave Parker, Billy Wagner, Dick Allen, CC Sabathia, and Ichiro were honored among the all-time greats. The first Japanese-born player enshrined in baseball’s Hall of Fame, Ichiro’s speech was full of outstanding moments. You can watch the entire thing here, but I’d like to single out this section:

TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)

We’ll end today with one more amazing moment from yesterday’s Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Here’s Dave Parker’s son honoring his late father:
