A newsworthy weekend; Women's Bracketology

Good Morning! Today is Monday, March 10. Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of sports.

THREE STARS OF THE WEEKEND

  1. Way back on Friday night, Nikola Jokic became the first player in NBA history with 30 points, 20 rebounds, and 20 assists in a single game. Yes, the game went to overtime, but look at it this way: Jokic had a triple-double in the first 26:30 of the game… and then another triple-double in the second 26:30!

  2. We’ll get to more NFL news in a bit, but how about a moment for Josh Allen? The MVP signed a massive new contract yesterday with the Bills reportedly worth $330 million.

  3. The sport of college basketball is our third star.... it was a fantastic weekend of games, highlighted by two rivalry-winning buzzer-beaters– first, Mark Sears at Alabama, and then Zuby Ejiofor for St. John’s. Then, we got our first taste of March Madness, as SIUE, High Point, Omaha, Lipscomb, and Drake (potential Cinderella, don’t forget about Drake) punched their ticket to the tournament.

NHL TRADE DEADLINE WRAP-UP

There were tons of last-minute deals on Friday afternoon at the NHL trade deadline. Two, however, were stunning to all who follow the sport:

Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand was traded to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Florida has some injury issues at the moment, but a Marchand-Sam Reinhart-Matthew Tkachuk forward line during the postseason is going to be deadly.

Just weeks after a shock trade for Avalanche star forward Mikko Rantanen, the Hurricanes are moving on. Carolina dealt Rantanen to the Dallas Stars, where the pending free agent reached a new contract extension. Let’s just say his 13 games with the Canes didn’t go too well.

LIVE FROM INDIAN WELLS

They call this tournament “Tennis Paradise” but it’s been tough sledding for the top seeds in Palm Springs. Three of the top ten players in the men’s draw– (1) Alexander Zverev, (4) Casper Ruud, and (6) Novak Djokovic– all lost their first matches. The favorites are all still alive on the women’s side, but it hasn’t been easy. Predictions and analysis coming later this week, as we enter the round of 16 on Tuesday…

FOOTBALL MOVES

Remember a few weeks ago when superstar defensive end Myles Garrett requested a trade from the Browns? Cleveland offered him a record-breaking contract and now Garrett is staying.

The Seattle Seahawks are going to look very different next season. They traded quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and wide receiver DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Finally, the Los Angeles Rams made a big splash, signing receiver Davante Adams.

OTHER HEADLINES

LeBron James will miss at least a week if not two after straining his groin Saturday night against the Celtics.

The worst part of spring training are the injuries… young Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez will begin the year on the injured list with an elbow problem… Mets catcher Fransisco Alvarez will be out six-eight weeks after surgery on a broken hand… and the biggest baseball news of the weekend, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is seeking a second opinion after doctors recommended Tommy John surgery.

Down three shots with five to play, Russell Henley made an impressive charge to overtake Collin Morikawa and win the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

We’ve got coaching changes in the ACC! Florida State hired former Seminole player and current Sacramento Kings assistant Luke Loucks to be their new head coach. And just one season after an unlikely run to the Final Four, NC State has fired head coach Kevin Keatts.

WOMEN’S BRACKETOLOGY

Most of the top women’s teams have the week off after finishing their conference tournaments yesterday. It’s a stacked field this season and anyone’s guess on who will win the title. Let’s sort through the top teams:

DARK HORSES: Tennessee, Kansas State, and Florida State

TOP FOUR SEED:

  1. Baylor/Ole Miss | 15. Oklahoma | 14. Ohio State | 13. Kentucky | 12. North Carolina

These teams have earned the right to host two rounds of the NCAA tournament, but there’s a bit of a gap between them and the next tier.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN:

  1. NC State | 10. Florida State | 9. LSU | 8. Duke | 7. TCU

Congratulations to Duke and TCU on winning their conference tournaments this week and locking in a number two seed! Any of these five could go on a run and upset a top team, but they won’t be the betting favorites past the Sweet 16.

THE SIX TEAMS WHO CAN WIN IT ALL:

  1. Notre Dame | 5. Texas | 4, 3, 2 and 1. South Carolina, USC, UCLA, UConn

Notre Dame has lost three of their last five games and barely hold onto a position in the top group. That being said, their star backcourt of Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo could carry them all the way to a title. Texas has two losses all season and split the season series against South Carolina… they will be the top-ranked two seed. As for the others? Good luck predicting the outcome if they all make the final four. Defending champion South Carolina won each game in the SEC tournament by 18+ points. UCLA won the Big 10 tournament and had just two losses all season– both of them, however, were against USC, who are led by the best player in the country, Juju Watkins. Meanwhile, Paige Bueckers and UConn are on a roll, with only one loss since December. Get ready for a fantastic tournament!
