A Monday Night Football rollercoaster
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, December 2nd.
*Marquette was inexplicably forgotten about in yesterday’s list of undefeated men’s college basketball teams. Apologies to the Golden Eagles
NFL
What a game last night between the Broncos and Browns! A back-and-forth affair included 73 points, 953 total yards, and four lead changes before Denver finally pulled away. Here’s what happened:
Both offenses alternated between scoring drives and missed opportunities in the first half– we’ll pick up the action in the third quarter, with the score 21-17 in favor of the Broncos. Facing a 3rd and long, Bo Nix connected with Marvin Mims on an awesome 93-yard touchdown pass. One play later, Jameis Winston answered, finding former Bronco Jerry Jeudy on a 70-yard touchdown. That’s 163 yards of touchdown passes in two plays! After a two-point conversion, the score was 28-25.
Speaking of Jeudy, the Browns wideout had a career night. His nine catches for 235 yards and a touchdown was the best performance of his career.
Despite Jeudy’s efforts, the Broncos took a 34-32 lead on a field goal with three minutes remaining. But Jameis Winston was picked off on the next drive, and Ja’Quan McMillian ran back a 44-yard pick six. Denver won a thrilling contest 41-32:
After a NFL record of 668 combined passing yards plus interception return yards (including two-pick sixes), Jameis Winston reacted to his performance.

NBA
A couple of NBA highlights on this fine Tuesday morning:
The NBA leader in assists per game is Trae Young, and with 15 more dimes passed out last night, his lead will only grow. Young added 12 points to complete a double-double, and the Atlanta Hawks beat the New Orleans Pelicans 124-112.
Peyton Pritchard scored 25 points off the bench, leading the Boston Celtics to a comfortable 108-89 victory over the Miami Heat.
Josh Giddey had a triple-double and the Chicago Bulls beat the Brooklyn Nets 128-102.
The Minnesota Timberwolves crushed the Los Angeles Lakers 109-80. LeBron James had just 10 points on 4-16 shooting– he’s missed 19 consecutive three-pointers.
NHL
And now we head to the ice, where there were three games on Monday night:
The Dallas Stars held on to a tenuous 2-0 lead, beating the Utah Hockey Club 2-1 for their third straight win.
Auston Matthews scored for the first time since returning from a nine-game absence due to injury, and the Toronto Maple Leafs took down the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.
Watch out for the New Jersey Devils– after they were snubbed in yesterday’s Remix NHL top-five rankings, the Devils crushed the New York Rangers 5-1. Jack Hughes had two goals to lead the way for New Jersey.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Christian McCaffrey has once again been placed on injured reserve. The 49ers star running back is likely out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury on Sunday night in Buffalo.
Three notes if you want to sound really smart ahead of the College Football Rankings release tonight–
If Clemson wins the ACC championship game, they’ll steal the final at-large bid from Miami (or Alabama, if the committee somehow forces the Tide into the playoff again). Despite what SEC fans will tell you, SMU should be safe even with a loss.
The winners of Boise State-UNLV and Arizona State-Iowa State will make the playoff. The losers will not. Their order in the rankings will most likely be 1. Boise State 2. ASU 3. Iowa State 4. UNLV. So if Boise wins, a non-power four team will receive a first-round bye as one of the top four conference champions.
Not a playoff-related note, but the Heisman race is between Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter. Jeanty is breaking all sorts of records and leading the country in every rushing stat, while Hunter plays every snap of both offense and defense at a high level. You can try to decide which is more impressive.
