A gift-wrapped week of sports magic
Good Morning! Today is Friday, December 27. Here’s what happened the last few days in the world of sports.
NBA
What a fun Christmas for the NBA! Let’s get to some highlights, shall we?
Game one was in New York, where the Spurs visited the Knicks. Victor Wembanyama showed up for the big day, dropping 42 points and 18 rebounds. But he was out-dueled by Mikal Bridges, who scored 41 points of his own and led New York to a thrilling 117-114 win.
The second game of the night was won by the Timberwolves, who withstood a late Mavericks comeback for a 105-99 victory. However, the story of this one is Dallas star Luka Doncic, who will be out at least a month after suffering a calf strain.
Tyrese Maxey came up clutch and a healthy 76ers team got their best win of the season in Boston. And skipping to the late-night game, the Suns took down the Nuggets thanks to 27 points each from Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.
But the game of the day was in the Bay. LeBron James took on Steph Curry for the 52nd time in their careers, and the star power not disappoint! LeBron scored 31 and dished out 10 assists. Young Warriors guard Jonathan Kuminga slammed home the dunk of the year. The underrated Austin Reaves had a triple-double. And Steph Curry led everyone with 38 points, including eight three-pointers. But for all the stats I can list, you really just have to watch the final two minutes for yourself. It’s truly special to see these all-time greats battle it out…

You thought that was the end? Nope, the NBA gave us two more incredible game-winning shots last night. Check out Tyler Herro’s step-back dagger to beat the Magic and then enjoy Jaden Ivey’s ridiculous winner for the Pistons:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
I didn’t think we’d need to recap each of the bowl games from the last three days, but they’ve each been exceptional competitions. Here are the quick highlights:
Christmas Eve at the Hawaii Bowl, USF took down San Jose State in five overtimes!
And then yesterday, Toledo beat Pitt 48-46 in six overtimes! When people ask you which bowl game had the most overtimes in college football history, you can tell them it was the 2024 GameAbove Sports Bowl.
Kansas State was down 34-17 to Rutgers in the third quarter of the Rate Bowl, but the Wildcats stormed back to win 44-41. Although Rutgers did pull off this really smart trick play touchdown.
And finally, Arkansas State beat Bowling Green 38-31 at the 68 Ventures Bowl. That’s four bowl games in three days, all decided by one score! And they said the college football postseason wasn’t entertaining…
NFL
No, I didn’t forget about the NFL. They just gave us three of the least entertaining games of the entire season. Funny how teams don’t perform as well on short rest. Who would have predicted that?
The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the number one seed in the AFC with a convincing 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Travis Kelce caught a touchdown pass in the victory, giving him the all-time lead in Kansas City franchise history (77).
And the Houston Texans got embarrassed by the Baltimore Ravens, losing 31-2 at home. That’s right, the score was 31 to TWO! In a matchup of AFC division leaders, the only points Houston scored came on a safety. Meanwhile, Lamar Jackson moved into first place all-time in QB rushing yards, passing Michael Vick. Could Lamar be headed towards his third career MVP?
Finally, the Seahawks beat the Bears last night 6-3. There were 13 punts. I know this game was technically on a Thursday, but maybe we should listen to LeBron…

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Yet another legendary ACC leader is stepping away from their position due to the changing landscape of college sports. Longtime Miami basketball coach Jim Larrañaga is stepping down, effective immediately. Here’s what he had to say about the decision:
“What shocked me beyond belief was after we made it to the Final Four just 18 months ago, the very first time I met with the players, eight of them decided they were going to put their name in the portal and leave. I said, ‘Don’t you like it here?’ (They said) ‘No, I love it. I love Miami. It’s great.’ But the opportunity to make money someplace else created a situation that you have to begin to ask yourself, as a coach, what is this all about? And the answer is, it’s become professional… I just didn’t feel like I could successfully navigate this whole new world that I was dealing with.
