A Beautiful Tuesday in February
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Tuesday, February 25.
NBA
Luka Doncic and the LA Lakers hosted the Dallas Mavericks last night. So yeah, it wasn’t your average regular season game in February. Jason Kidd and the Mavs sent double-teams at their former star all-night, limiting his scoring output. And the visitors fought hard, clawing back from an early deficit to keep the game close until the very end. Kyrie Irving scored 35 points and Klay Thompson added 22. But the Lakers simply have too many weapons– LeBron James had 27 and 12, Austin Reaves scored 20 points with five assists, and Doncic recorded his first triple-double in purple and gold. It wasn’t always pretty, but LA won 107-99. Also, I let out an audible gasp while watching this pass by Luka in real-time… he’s got eyes in the back of his head:
There are so many good teams in the Western Conference… Memphis took on Phoenix last night and the star-power was on display. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, and Bol Bol (Bol Bol!) all scored 23+ points for the Suns in a game that went to overtime. But Ja Morant was clutch, leading all scorers with 29 points, including this game-tying floater to send the game to OT. The Grizzlies continued their winning ways, defeating Phoenix 151-148 in overtime.
NHL
The game of the night comes from Boston, where the Bruins hosted one of their rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Boston jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind two power-play goals. Even after Toronto battled back in the third period, the Bruins led 4-3 with less than a minute remaining. But the Maple Leafs were not to be denied. They tied the game with 45 seconds remaining, and star forward Mitch Marner scored a beauty in overtime to secure a 5-4 victory. Check out the incredible save by Anthony Stolarz to set up the Maple Leafs winner:
…oh, and Alexander Ovechkin scored again. 12 goals from the record!
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
(9) Iowa State was upset 74-68 by Oklahoma State. A stat to remember about the Cyclones– while they’re 14-1 at home, they are just 7-6 on the road and at neutral sites.
Georgia upset (3) Florida last night, too. The Bulldogs are trying to get back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015, and this win was a big step in the right direction. Although Gators guard Will Richard scored 30 points, the home team won 88-83.
SPRING TRAINING!
It takes a lot for a spring training highlight to make the Remix. But you simply have to see “The Jefry Yan experience” for yourself:

This may be the only Rockies highlight of the season. At least it’s a fun one!
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The legendary Diana Taurasi has officially retired from professional basketball. Widely expected to leave the game after her 20th season in the WNBA, Taurasi announced the decision yesterday in this exclusive feature in Time magazine. Congratulations to arguably the greatest women’s basketball player of all-time and also one of the greatest athletes of a generation.
