21 in a row! And still counting...
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Monday, August 5th.
OLYMPICS
You’d think all this Olympics stuff would get tiring after awhile… nope, they just introduce a new event and I’m hooked again. Here’s what happened yesterday:
Team USA:
Valarie Allman was the day’s big winner, taking home her second straight gold medal in discus. My favorite story from the day, Allman only started throwing discus in high school because she wanted to be included in track and field’s spaghetti team dinners. How crazy is that?
The USA women’s 3×3 basketball game won a bronze medal yesterday. Doesn’t sound too exceptional, but bronze was a pretty impressive finish for this team, who started the tournament 0-3.
After days of weather and wave-size delays, Caroline Marks won the gold medal in surfing. The Tahiti portion of the Paris games is now officially over.
Around the world:
Simone Biles was the favorite to win another gold in the gymnastics floor routine competition, but for the first time in her career, she was bested by Brazilian Rebeca Andrade. American Jordan Chiles took home the bronze.
There was some drama in the women’s 5000 meter race! Eventually, after a lengthy video review and committee discussion, the contact between the runners was ruled incidental. Two Kenyans, Beatrice Chebet and Faith Kipyegon, won gold and silver.
And check out the play of the day (below) for the newest star of these Olympic games…
Finally, in case you think it’s called “ping pong” and isn’t that difficult– here are some of the best table tennis points from the 2024 Olympics:
Olympic-level table tennis is DIFFERENT. 😤🏓

MLB
Only half the league played yesterday, but there were a few can’t miss ballgames:
The streak lives on! The Chicago White Sox lost to the Athletics 5-1 last night, their 21st loss in a row. What’s the record, you might be wondering? The record from the Modern Era (1900 to the present) is 23 consecutive losses, held by the 1961 Phillies. We knew the White Sox were really, really bad. Turns out, they might be historically awful.
Down a runs with two outs in the 10th inning, Texas Rangers shortstop Josh Smith hit a two-run walk-off home run to beat the Astros. This is a massive win for Texas, who trail Houston in the division and the wild card race.
Marlins outfielder Jesus Sanchez hit a 480-foot home run, the longest of the season. It was in a losing effort, however, as Cincinnati beat Miami 10-3. Elly De La Cruz hit two home runs of his own for the Reds.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
Brandon Aiyuk may or may not be traded? Sorry everyone, outside of some fights during NFL practices, sort of a slow news day. Don’t worry, just 18 days remain until College Football kicks off!
PLAY OF THE DAY
The gold medal already his, Armand Duplantis decided to keep going– he wanted to break the pole vault world record for the ninth time. With one try remaining and the Stade de France on their feet, Mando delivered: (skip to 5:05 for the final vault)
Born in Louisiana but representing his mother’s home country of Sweden, the gold-medalist had this to say: "If I don't beat this moment in my career, then I'm pretty OK with that. I don't think you can get much better than what just happened." Well said, Mando. Well said.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: Red Sox @ Royals, 8:10 PM; White Sox @ Athletics, 9:40 PM
Two AL wild card teams begin a very interesting three-game series. Jarren Duran and Bobby Witt Jr. are two of the most exciting players in baseball, and they’ll face each other in Kansas City. And of course, the most terrible streak faces another test: will the White Sox lose their 22nd game in a row?
