10 billion dollars!
Good Morning! Here’s what happened in the world of sports on Wednesday, June 18.
MLB
Baseball is back in the Remix leadoff spot– a whole lot of games got rained out, but let’s get to some recaps:
The Tampa Bay Rays trailed the Baltimore Orioles 8-0 after two innings yesterday. Wouldn’t you know it, they won the ballgame! Tampa scored 12 unanswered runs for the unlikely victory.
Well New York finally scored a few runs, but they continued their losing streak. The Yankees lost to the Angels 3-2.
3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning. Manger Dave Roberts calls for a pinch hitter and Will Smith steps up to bat for the Dodgers. I think you know where this one is headed…

COLLEGE BASEBALL
Jared Jones tied the game in the 8th and then laced a liner up the middle for a walk-off single in the 9th, leading LSU to a 6-5 win over Arkansas and clinching a spot in the College World Series.
Their opponent? The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, who haven’t lost a baseball game since April 22nd! Coastal’s 11-2 win yesterday against Louisville was their 26th in a row.
NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The biggest story of the day comes from the city of Los Angeles, where the lead owner of the Dodgers Mark Walter is purchasing the Los Angeles Lakers for $10 billion dollars. $10 billion dollars… take a moment, catch your breath. Ok, now we’ll break this down:
The Buss family has owned the most prestigious team in the NBA since Jerry Buss bought the Lakers in 1969. The price was a mere $69 million. While the Buss family will no longer be the primary owners, their legacy among the purple and gold is cemented forever, as they oversaw some of the greatest sports teams in American history. In addition, Jeanie Buss will remain in her role as team governor.
This is the largest sale of a sports franchise in North American history. LA’s rival, the Boston Celtics, were sold earlier this year for the paltry sum of just over $6 billion.
Finally, Lakers fans should be excited. Since Walton and Guggenheim Partners took over the Dodgers in 2012, the team has won two World Series and established a reputation around baseball as one of the most competitive teams and one of the front offices most willing to spend money. Get ready for the Luka era to take off.
That news completely overshadowed the situation in Tampa Bay. While not official, reports are the Rays are being sold to a local Jacksonville real estate developer for $1.7 billion. It’s potentially the conclusion to a drawn-out saga between current Rays ownership, the city of Tampa Bay, and Major League Baseball. All three parties have been frustrated by the number of fans that go to games and the plans/lack of plans to rebuild Tropicana Field.
The Packers shocked a lot of people when they released oft-injured, Pro Bowl corner Jaire Alexander earlier this offseason. On Tuesday, Ravens QB Lamar Jackson publicly called out for his team to sign Jackson’s former college teammate. And yesterday, Baltimore got the deal done. With Alexander joining the secondary, the terrifying Ravens defense just got even better…
Finally, Tyrese Haliburton’s status for tomorrow night’s win-or-go home game in Indiana is questionable. The Pacers star guard strained his calf during the first half of Oklahoma City’s win in game five.
TODAY’S BIG GAMES (all times Eastern)
MLB: The Tigers and Pirates have a double-header tomorrow. Paul Skenes is scheduled to pitch, as is Tarik Skubal… unfortunately, they are not currently matched up against each other. Keep an eye on this one though, in case we see the two best in the sport go head-to-head!
